Maru Tokyo, a Tokyo-style pancake shop in Chiang Mai — flew to Chiang Mai and got the chance to try this Tokyo-style snack, genuinely delicious. The batter is soft and fragrant, and eaten hot it still has a crispy surface. There's a huge choice of fillings, both savory and sweet. Our favorite savory filling was crab stick with miso — unusual, we'd never seen a miso filling anywhere else, rich and fragrant.
For sweet, we loved lemon + almond, an intensely tart flavor paired with crunchy almond, a great match. We'd recommend ordering any sweet filling and adding almond to it — it makes it even better. Prices start at 15 baht a piece. The shop is at the inner side of Chang Phueak Gate, open 11 AM-7 PM, closed Thursdays.
