Apple has unveiled the iPhone Duo, its first foldable phone, and the most interesting part right now is a set of camera features designed specifically for the dual-screen body — things no other iPhone can do.
Four headline features
Smart Take uses AI to detect the moment everyone in the frame is ready and takes the shot for you. Fold the phone halfway, stand it up, and run into the picture — no timer, and nobody has to stay behind the camera.
Kid Cue is for every parent who never gets the whole family looking the same way: the outer screen plays cute Peanuts animations to draw a child's eyes to the camera.
Duo Preview shows the live camera preview on both screens at once, so the person being photographed can see themselves and adjust their pose before the shutter fires.
Duo FaceTime lets a friend sitting next to you join a video call on the outer screen while you use the inner one — no passing the phone around or crowding over a small display.
Stands on its own, no tripod needed
The hinge doubles as a built-in stand, so the phone sits on a table for FaceTime, video, selfies and long exposures. New here: you can take selfies with the 48MP rear camera while using the outer screen as the viewfinder, which a slab iPhone can't do.
Camera specs
The rear is a two-camera Dual Fusion system. The main camera is 48MP (26mm), outputting 24MP by default and cropping to a 2x virtual telephoto at 52mm in 12MP, with sensor-shift OIS and autofocus. The second camera is a 48MP ultra wide at 13mm that also handles centimetre-range macro.
With no dedicated telephoto lens, optical zoom stops at 2x and digital zoom reaches 10x.
On video there is a new Smart Focus Tracking feature that uses AI to hold focus on a subject even if it briefly leaves the frame, 4K Dolby Vision at 120fps, Cinematic mode at 60fps with effects that can be edited after shooting for the first time, and stabilised time-lapse up to 4K Dolby Vision without a tripod.
The outer front camera is 12MP, below the 18MP on the iPhone 17 and iPhone 18 Pro, while the inner under-display camera supports FaceTime at 1080p.
What the iPhone Duo lacks versus the iPhone 18 Pro / Pro Max
A telephoto lens, Pro Controls, Apple Reference Image, variable aperture, second-generation OIS, Adaptive True Tone flash, Spatial photo and video, ProRAW, ProRes, ProRes RAW, Genlock, Apple Log 2 and the studio-quality microphone array.
If you shoot a lot of group photos and like the foldable idea, this camera is built for convenience; if you care about long zoom or professional video, the iPhone 18 Pro is still the one to look at. The iPhone Duo opens for pre-order on October 16 and goes on sale October 23.
